EWU Patterson Hall
Cheney, WA
Patterson Hall was finished in 1970 and contained various classrooms and offices. It was named after Don Patterson, EWU president from 1954 -1967. Eastern Washington University's largest academic building, Patterson Hall, is located next to the Pence Union Building (PUB) in the heart of the EWU campus. Starting in 2010, the hall began a $57 million reconstruction project which involved stripping the building to its foundation and adding office wings on three sides of the building. The modernization of the existing interior space allows students and faculty to benefit from the fully equipped and enhanced classrooms, including two computer labs and a forensic lab, and improvements in accommodations for students with special needs.
The building's sustainable building design is highlighted by a new glass facade that surrounds the 34,000 square feet added to the structure. The extra space includes abundant and comfortable lounge seating that will give students a place to study or visit between classes. Patterson's environmentally-friendly construction and landscaping will meet the minimum standards for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification. The LEED program is sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council, the nation's leading advocate of sustainable design. Reconstruction on Patterson began in April of 2010 and included the addition of the office wings. This first phase was completed in the summer of 2012. The second phase of work included buildout and modernization of the interior structure. The total space in Patterson is now more than 136,000 square feet. The state-of-the-art building has 44 classrooms and 180 workstations for faculty and staff, many from the College of Arts, Letters and Education and the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences and Social Work.
